An Update from the Board
March 2025
RTB Supporters:Â
Restore the Balance (RTB) came into being in 2021 in reaction to the events on January 6. The founding members wanted to advocate in favor of political conduct and political candidates who engaged in peaceful, thoughtful, and non-threatening debate with opponents. The board formulated seven founding principles for citizens to review and endorse. Thousands of voters from all parties signed on to endorse these.
Today, the Trump administration is frequently ignoring those principles which have generally favored the development of the strong republican system of government we enjoy. This is the system which guarantees our right to free speech, our right to worship as we choose, our right to access news from differing viewpoints. These rights are American rights and our board chooses to focus on them. We are adding the following language to our published principles:
Constitutional freedom of speech and freedom of the press, as well as the doctrines of separation of church and state and balance of power among the three branches of government, must be protected and defended along with equal application of the Rule of Law regardless of station, office, or political party affiliation.
Our principles are not aligned with any one political party. We are hopeful that public servants and voters of all parties can see all of our principles as foundational to our republican system of government. We believe that the Rule of Law needs to be applied equally to all---without fear or favor.
We are not an organization committed to advocating for particular public policy stances or legislation except as they may relate to this last, and most recently adopted principle above. The next few years are a critical time in our country’s history. Above all, we encourage the public to seek out trustworthy news sources, to ask questions of elected officials and of candidates for office.
At Restore the Balance we will focus on trying to point members to forums and other educational opportunities about issues having to do with democracy, elections, and the Constitution.
As always, we welcome new supporters committed to principled and civil discussion regardless of political party. We will encourage citizens to stay engaged in the American political process.
Thanks to all for your ongoing support of our mission. We look forward to continuing to build a political environment that reflects our shared values.
