The latest dizzying change in the United States political landscape with the nomination of Kamala Harris and the naming of Tim Walz as VP has resulted in what appears to be an awakening of a movement toward democracy and real freedom in this country.
America has been disappointed in its choices for president for more than a year. The message of President Biden that the election is a choice between democracy and autocracy was not getting through because of the age of the messenger. What we are seeing with the sizes and enthusiasm of the crowds turning out for Harris and Walz is the outpouring of relief that the messenger has changed and there is cause to celebrate our great country.
The Trump campaign continues denigrating the United States while the Harris campaign talks of hope and promise for the future. The blatantly racist attacks on Harris by Trump are falling short because this is not 2016. Labels such as “radical liberal” ring hollow. The questions voters are asking include: What can you do about inflation? What can you do to guarantee that I have adequate health care? What can you do about the government’s intrusion into my wife and daughter’s health-care decisions? What can you do to protect my children from gun violence and politicians who seek to limit my child’s education?
The Trump campaign offers no answers to these questions. Is it radical to feed hungry children in school, to guarantee parental leave for childcare, to allow families the option of IVF treatments, to allow women the choice to make their own health-care decisions or to enact reasonable gun control measures such as universal background checks?
How are these things wrong? This doesn’t sound radical. It sounds like helping people.
