Why do so many Republicans hate America? Angie Many’s letter in the July 12 edition of the Daily Sentinel encapsulates the irrational hatred of the United States that is preached nearly every day by Donald Trump and Fox News. She anxiously complains about a “flood of immigrants” who bring crime and drugs to our country. Surely, she must know that Trump killed the most comprehensive and restrictive border and immigration bill ever brought before Congress-- sponsored by Senator Langford, one of the most conservative members of the Senate. As far as criminal activity by immigrants, she must not look at statistics which establish that immigrants account for a much smaller percentage of crime in this country than do native born citizens. As for inflation, she must have forgotten the pandemic and the supply chain shortages that drove up prices and the fact that wages now exceed inflation as a result of President Biden’s policies. As for this country’s standing in the world, we have the greatest economy of any other nation, less inflation, the strongest military by far, and we have consolidated alliances in Asia and Europe which have contained China and thwarted Putin’s aggression. She talks of non-existent riots and complains of statue toppling, apparently concerned about efforts to eliminate monuments to confederate generals who fought for slavery. Admittedly, our education system is not what we want it to be, but Republican efforts to cut funding for public schools in favor of private education accounts for most of our problems. We have a great country that we all should love, not the weak, failing nation Donald Trump portrays. The governor of Pennsylvania said it best, “We need to stop s—t talking America.”
